Following my trip Cuba in 2014, I travelled onto Colombia where I joined an Intrepid Group Tour –9 day Colonial Colombia. Here are a few of my highlights from that journey.
Cartagena – The old city is full of colourful colonial buildings with flowering bougainvillea cascading over the balconies to the cobbled streets below. It is a smaller, restored version of Old Havana surrounded by a stone wall and the old city is packed with churches, monasteries, plazas and mansions. I watch as ladies dressed in Crows colours (also the colours of the Colombian flag) sell fruit carried in bowls on their heads.
Tayrona National Park – A highlight for me was to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy a National Park with no vehicle access. We left our back packs behind and only carried essentials in our day pack into the Park for an overnight stay. I walked for 90 minutes though one of the highest coastal mountain ranges in the world plunging dramatically down to the Caribbean sea. The trail led though a rainforest and along the coast on a well-made path until we reached the camping area close to the sea and our bed for the night; a hammock covered in a mosquito net.
Caribbean Sea – No better way to spend the day on one of the many sandy beaches scattered along the coastline bordered by boulders from the mountain range, palm trees swaying in the breeze and butterflies flying overhead as I wade though the warm sea snorkelling with turtles and tropical fish.
