Description

About the program – what can I expect?
On request of our previous travellers, we are now proud to present a hiking adventure with M/S Stockholm as our base. In a group of maximum 12 passengers and 2 experienced guides we explore the enchanting world of Svalbard.

As always when you travel with PolarQuest the main goal is to experiences the archipelago’s breath-taking nature and unique wildlife. We plan to head out on shorter and longer hikes on the Arctic tundra. In addition to the hikes we will make Zodiac cruises and other interesting landings. During the shorter hikes we plan to be out for 2-4 hours and up to 6 hours on the longer hikes. If the opportunity arises, we will eat one or a few of our lunches in the middle of the wilderness! Back on board we enjoy a cup of hot chocolate in the ship’s welcoming lounge. If lucky, we will also be treated with some wonderful sunsets.

Since the western part of Svalbard offers many great hiking sites, we will focus on this area at first-hand. Examples on hikes that you might find in the itinerary is top tours as well as walks along the coast. We can never predict which sites we will visit or how many and how long the hikes will be, as the exact route always depends on weather, wind and the wildlife we encounter. Safety always comes first, and we only set out on hikes if the weather and terrain permit.

Who can go on this trip?
Comparing to our general Svalbard expeditions, this trip focuses more on hiking. When opportunities arise, we will head out on hiking tours in a comfortable pace. The length of a hike can be anything from 2 to 6 hours. The terrain varies and can be hilly and rugged, which requires that you are in good physical condition, have good balance and previous hiking experience. All expedition members will have the same program ashore, hence there will be no opportunities to divide the group into smaller groups. Since we are in the land of the polar bear, it is a necessity that you always stay with the group and follow our experienced guides’ instructions. We hope that you will join this unforgettable Arctic adventure! Should you have any questions about the trip, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Day 1: Longyearbyen
We arrive in Longyearbyen, embark our expedition ship in the afternoon and sail out through the spectacular Isfjorden.
Day 2 - Day 2 – 10: Western Spitsbergen, Svalbard
We are now in a part of the world where we are totally dependent on the ice and weather conditions. Our exact itinerary depends on these factors and on the wildlife we encounter. Our ambition is to make landings, hikes or cruises every day with our Zodiacs. Here are some examples of places we may visit:IsfjordenIsfjorden offers plenty of great landings sites, perfectly suitable for refreshing hikes. One possible shorter hike takes us to Svenskhuset, the isolated wooden house where 17 seal hunters died in the winter of 1872 – 73.Prins Karl’s ForlandThis narrow strip of land is covered by a magnificent, snow-covered mountain chain. The island is home to many seabirds and harbour seals. It also invites to great hiking opportunities.KongsfjordenThe scientific village of Ny-Ålesund is situated in Kongsfjorden. It was from here that Amundsen and Nobile started their heroic expeditions to the North Pole. Ny-Ålesund might also be the starting or end point for one of our hikes. In Kongsfjorden we also find Olssønfjellet and if weather permits, we can enjoy a mountain top tour. A bit north lies Danskøya, the starting point for two other courageous attempts to reach the North Pole. Swedish explorer Andrée made an attempt with a hydrogen balloon and American journalist Wellman started with an airship. There are still interesting remnants from these expeditions left on this site. The magnificent fjords of SvalbardSvalbard offers the visitor countless spectacular fjords, home to an abundance of wildlife. Below, we have listed some of the fjords and glaciers that we might explore with ship or Zodiac during our journey:In Krossfjorden we revel in the beautifully sculptured front of the 14th of July Glacier.Liefdefjorden, meaning “The fjord of love”, is lined with snow-covered mountain peaks and here we hope to cruise along the face of the spectacular Monaco Glacier.Raudfjorden is an area of immense natural beauty – dominated by beautiful glaciers. It is also a favourite spot for seals. The fjord offers many excellent hiking opportunities, up to Richardvatnet or Rabotryggen just to mention a few.HornsundThe majestic Hornsund consists of several magnificent fjords along the west coast of Spitsbergen, where enormous glaciers calve out shimmering blue ice. This is one of the favourite haunts for some of Svalbard’s polar bears and if lucky we can spot one of them on the fjord ice.
Day 3 - Day 11: Longyearbyen
Early morning we disembark our expedition ship and begin our journey back home.
Day 4 - Please Note:
Our exact route and program route will depend on ice, weather conditions and wildlife. We always strive to maximize your experience. Please remember that flexibility is the key to a successful expedition!
