Joining the Expedition. We will arrange for a complimentary shuttle bus to pick you up from your Te Anau accommodation and transfer you to the transport we have arranged to take you across Lake Manapouri and the Wilmot Pass to Deep Cove. On arrival you will be welcomed aboard the Strannik where we will introduce you to the team and the vessel. We plan to get underway and begin our exploration shortly thereafter.

Doubtful and Dusky Sounds (technically Fiords) have everything that is quint-essentially Fiordland; they have wild landscapes and seascapes as well as a labyrinth of exciting waterways and anchorages for us to explore. Dusky has arguably more history than any other part of Fiordland, more nature and opportunities for a range of activities to suit everybody’s interests. The journal of Captain James Cook who anchored in Dusky Sound in 1773 gives us fascinating insights into the pre-European history. His writings document his own exploration of the Fiords and explain many of the place names, still in use today. Other early writers like those of Andreas Reischek and Richard Henry shed light onto the unique and abundant wildlife that was found here and, with intensive management by Department of Conservation staff (and others) is slowly returning. From dawn to dusk each day of the expedition we will go in pursuit of activities and opportunities that will bring this history and natural history alive. There will be dramatic new vistas and landscapes opening up all the time as we explore these remote and historic waterways. We will ensure that there is an opportunity to fish for some infamous Fiordland blue cod for dinner one night.

Breakfast aboard the Strannik anchored at Supper Cove at the head of Dusky Sound then sadly it’s time for our farewells, before joining a helicopter flight to Te Anau and your accommodation, or own transport arrangements.
