Small groups of just ten guests and two friendly guides explore the pristine beaches, tall ancient forests and world heritage sites by day and then each night relax with candlelit dining and elegant accommodation.

The trip starts and finishes in Hobart and includes two nights in superb, twin share, beachfront wilderness camps and a final night the heritage listed Bernacchi House in the former penal settlement of Darlington. Each night guests enjoy candlelit dining with gourmet Tasmanian fare and fine wine.

This spectacular island National Park is situated just off the east coast of Tasmania. It’s tranquility combined with its natural beauty, rare wildlife and fascinating history makes it a unique and special place. And on this award winning, 4 day gentle walk, you’ll experience all of it.

Maria Island’s pristine untouched beaches, the crystal clear waters of the surrounding Marine Reserve and scenery like the magnificent Mt Maria and Bishop and Clerk peaks will take your breath away. You’ll wander through forests of magnificent blue and white gums, some of them over 400 years old and unique to Maria Island. You’ll step back in time and walk where convicts and explorers have walked before you.

At the Fossils Cliffs you’ll see shellfish fossil beds unlike any other in the world. Maria Island is also famous for its abundance of wildlife being home to rare and endangered species like the Swift Parrot and Cape Barron Goose and of course, the Tasmanian Devil. It’s difficult to describe the beauty of Maria Island, you really have to see it to believe it.

Maria Island is 100% national park and has a resident population of just two park rangers and their one car! It is also an island sanctuary for many rare and unusual Tasmanian kangaroos and wallabies, wombats and echidnas, as well as a healthy population of Tasmanian devils. This spectacular island National Park is situated just off the east coast of Tasmania. It’s tranquility combined with its natural beauty, rare wildlife and fascinating history makes it a unique and special place. Maria Island’s pristine untouched beaches, the crystal clear waters of the surrounding Marine Reserve and scenery like the magnificent Mt Maria and Bishop and Clerk peaks will take your breath away. You’ll wander through forests of magnificent blue and white gums, some of them over 400 years old and unique to Maria Island. During the day guests carry only light packs (6-8kgs) and walk at a leisurely pace covering 30 kilometres (20 miles) over four days, with the longest day at 14 kilometres. Walking is on gentle paths or firm beaches with our two friendly and expert local guides providing interesting interpretation throughout.  The walk is the ultimate in authentic, cultural, small group tourism and it is easy to understand why it is regarded amongst Australia’s top experiences.  There are guides and there are Maria Island guides… Our guides are such an important part of your Maria Island experience. Our guides are not only chosen for their warm, caring and likeable personalities but also for their love of Maria Island. There’s very little our guides don’t know about the history flora and wildlife on Maria Island. Just ask them and you’ll soon find out.Guests often comment that our guides made their walk on Maria Island unforgettable. After a day of walking, you will relax in comfortable, elegant accommodation. The first two nights are in beautiful wilderness camps and the last night we stay in the historic Bernacchi House in the UNESCO world heritage listed settlement of Darlington. Our accommodation is provided exclusively for our guests and allows you to feel completely immersed in the wilderness and history of Maria Island Wildernss Glamping This isn’t camping as you know it. Our African safari style wilderness camps are located only moments from stunning beaches, tucked away in the beautiful surrounding forest. They are specially designed to have a small environmental footprint with bush showers and clean composting toilets. You’ll fall asleep in a comfortable bed in your own bush cabin to the sound of waves gently lapping nearby and wake to the sound of birds in the forest. A beautiful experience on its own.

Itinerary



Day 1 - Day 1 - Departs Hobart
Guests are picked up from their central Hobart accommodation from 7.30am and taken to the Maria Island office nearby to meet fellow walkers and guides. Jackets and backpacks can be collected here. The group is then driven to Triabunna, about 90 minutes away, to board our exclusive boat which crosses Mercury Passage en route to Shoal Bay on the island. Landing on the pristine beach just a short walk to the Casuarina Beach Camp, guests can relax around the camp or take a walk to the stunning Haunted Bay or Robey’s Farm. Delicious fresh Tasmanian produce and fine wines will be served by the guides in the camp and guests will stay overnight here. Day 2 - Day 2 - Maria Island
After a leisurely and relaxed breakfast, there’s plenty of time to enjoy the surroundings before guests walk from Riedle Bay across the isthmus and stroll along five fabulous beaches. The convict cells at Point Lesueur and the ochre pit at Bloodstone Point prove fascinating viewing along the way. Arriving at White Gums Camp, guests will be entertained by native birds while enjoying delicious wines on the deck before being served a satisfying and delicious dinner. Approx. walking distance 14km over flat grounds and firm sandy beaches.
Day 3 - Day 3 - Maria Island
Today after breakfast, guests head inland to stunning forests and enjoy a wealth of wildlife. The gentle inland track passes Hopgrounds Beach and the Painted Cliffs before arriving at Bernacchi House in Darlington. For the more adventurous, the 711m summit of Mt Maria calls delivering absolutely breathtaking 360° views. Alternatively, a hike up Bishop and Clerk is another rewarding option. Tonight guests stay in historic Bernacchi House, enjoy hot showers and a beautiful dinner in a traditional classic dining room. Approx. walking distance 6 km or around 17km if one of the peak walks is taken.
Day 4 - Day 4 - Darlington, farewell lunch and return to Hobart
After breakfast served in the house, guests can explore Darlington, the convict settlement and industrial ruins of his World Heritage site. A farewell lunch will be served overlooking Darlington before guests board the boat for Triabunna and the return trip to Hobart or the airport.
