Ravenna – the city of mosaics
Ravenna is a real treasure chest, bursting with magnificent mosaics and well-preserved monuments, including eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Basilica of San Vitale is one such example. Although unremarkable from the outside, its mesmerising interior is covered from floor to ceiling in thousands of glistening tiles.
Zadar: more than 2,000 years of history
With its modern promenade, which replaced the monotonous concrete harbour wall, Zadar has been given a new lease of life. The city’s pride and joy is the unique sea organ from which the waves coax deep soft sounds. On its steps, you can relax after strolling through the fortified old town with the monumental Church of St Donatus, the square of five wells, and four medival gates.
Between modernity and tradition: Bari
The wide boulevard Corso Emanuele II in Bari connects two very different worlds. While magnificent patrician houses and elegant shops dominate the new town, history comes alive in the old town with its labyrinth of narrow lanes. Most of this quarter has been reconstructed and so, modern tavernas and young galeries can now be found besides the Castello Svevo and numerous Apulian-Romanic churches.
Sail through the Bay of Kotor
The emerald-green Gulf of Kotor sprawls over nearly 30 kilometres (18.6 miles) between rugged cliffs. The impressive bay cuts deep into the coast of Montenegro, creating a spectacular fjordscape.
