Welcome to Madrid, the sassy central capital known for its boulevards and expansive parks. This vibrant, energetic city is the perfect place to kick-off you family adventure with Intrepid. Your journey begins with a welcome meeting at 6pm at your hotel. Please bring along next of kin, insurance and other essential information for every member of your family to pass on to your leader during this meeting. Following the group meeting, we will head out for our first dinner as a group. As there's limited time for sightseeing in Madrid, we recommend arriving a few days early to explore. Perhaps while away the hours along the Paseo del Arte, or Art Walk, for an expansive history of Western art. Start with the Museo del Prado, then discover modern Spanish masters, including Picasso and Dali, in the Museo Reina Sofia. Finish at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, which displays eight centuries of European painting.

Rise and shine for breakfast, then head out on an orientation walk with your leader. Make sure you save room for some special treats along the way (churros and chocolate!), and then take a stroll around the Royal Palace and Gardens. Take the rest of the afternoon and evening to explore Madrid at your own pace. A walk along the Manzanares River is a good option for active types, and there are hammocks, vines and swings along the way to keep young children entertained. Or perhaps simply sit back and people watch while you enjoy a coffee in one of the atmospheric streets and squares around the famous Plaza Mayor.

To the Romans it was known as Hispalis, to the Moors it was Isbiliya, and legend says it was founded by Hercules. Seville, a city known for its joviality and history, awaits today after a 3 hour train journey. Upon arrival, take an orientation walk to soak up the city’s charm and sparkle. Enjoy a free afternoon to enjoy as you wish. For views across the city, consider walking to the top of the Giralda Bell Tower, which is part of the beautiful gothic cathedral in the heart of the city. This evening, enjoy one of Seville’s most famous exports (aside from oranges), flamenco! This captivating and romantic dance is sure to enchant.

Start your day in Seville with a boat ride (1 hour) along the Guadalquivir River, the only navigable river in Spain. Look out for some of the city's beautiful landmarks, including Torre de Oro, Palacio de San Telmo and Triana bridge. Spend the rest of the day as you please in agreeable Seville! Maybe wander to the Old Town, a mass of winding alleyways and whitewashed houses that makes for a delightful place to while away a few hours. There are plenty of cafes that dot the sidewalks of the Old Town too, but try not to stuff yourself, as this evening you’ll embark on a ‘eating’ crawl of the city. Taste all that Seville has to offer in the form of tapas, the hot and cold snacks Spain is known for.

Bid adios to Seville and travel south to Gibraltar, located on the edge of the narrow slice of water that separates Europe and Africa. A guided tour will introduce you to the town and the towering, 426-meter-high limestone rock that dominates the ocean views, and spot some of the only wild monkeys in Europe – the barbary macaques. Remember, they’re pretty friendly, but they are known to bite, so keep your hands to yourself. You will also visit St Michael´s Cave and The Great Siege Tunnels. Continue to Estepona, a resort town on the Costa del Sol where you will stay this evening. Spend the night as you wish, perhaps taking a stroll along the palm-lined promenade, the Paseo Marítimo, or the flower-filled square of Plaza de las Flores, home to the eclectic artworks of the Coleccion Garo.

After breakfast, travel to the small village of Mijas Pueblo, a well-preserved traditional Andalucian town. Take a wander around this beautiful town and watch as donkey-pulled carriages navigate cobblestone streets. Enjoy the fantastic views of the Andalusian coast and you might even see the coast line of Morocco on a clear day. Spend some time here before continuing to Torremolinos. This beachside playground is the final stop on your itinerary, and it’s a good idea to get some rest this evening in preparation for the next few days.

Neighbouring Malaga is on the menu today, and after an orientation walk you’ll have the whole day to explore. Malaga is the definition of a family-friendly town, with attractions to delight those of all ages and persuasions. Maybe start with a walk through the Central Market, where many vendors have produce samples you can try before you buy. Get loaded up with fruit and snacks and then perhaps visit the Roman Theatre, a formerly buried amphitheatre constructed during the reign of Emperor Augustus that was uncovered in 1951.

Hit the water today on a 2-hour catamaran trip. Keep your eyes peeled and camera ready for dolphins swimming in the wild while you glide and skip across the water! Take the opportunity to cool off with a swim in the clear waters of the Alboran Sea. Return to land and enjoy a free afternoon before gathering for a farewell dinner this evening.
