Southern Hemisphere Adventure – South America and Antarctica

Southern Hemisphere Adventure – South America and Antarctica

From £5,184 GBP

Description

After an overnight stay at a hotel in Santiago de Chile, you will meet your expedition ship in Punta Arenas. Then the journey south begins as we sail through the extremely narrow Canal Gabriel and into the Garibaldi fjord. Here we take our small boats out for a closer look at the wildlife and two glaciers at the end of the fjord. If the weather is on our side we might come ashore on Cape Horn, the southernmost tip of South America.

Icebergs ahead
Next up is open sea before you will start seeing Antarctic penguins and icebergs in the water, and maybe whales as well, as we sail into the most remote area of the world. Here you can join our expedition team and explore Antarctica with landings and kayaking giving you a close look at thousands of penguins and seals, and visit the most interesting places.

Pubs and red buses
Turning back we will spend a few days at the Falkland Islands experiencing everything from red buses and English pubs in the capital Stanley to penguins, hikes in the area or kayaking. As we are in slightly warmer latitudes everybody is even invited to a sleep over party out on deck. The last days on board are spent crossing the Drake Passage and then sailing along the coast of Argentina, before debarkation in Montevideo.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Day 1: Taste of Santiago
Welcome to Chile, where your adventure starts with an overnight stay at a hotel in Santiago de Chile. Founded in 1541, Santiago has been the capital city of Chile since colonial times. The city has a downtown core of 19th century Neoclassical architecture, and winding side streets dotted with buildings of Art Deco, Neo-Gothic, and other architectural styles. Santiago's cityscape is shaped by several stand-alone hills and the fast-flowing Mapocho River, and lined by parks such as Parque Forestal. The mountains of the Andes can be seen from most points in the city.
Day 2 - Day 2: Midnatsol Awaits
Today you will fly to Punta Arenas where your expedition ship is awaiting you. Once on board the MS Midnatsol we kick off everything with a welcome-on-board dinner.
Day 3 - Day 3: Out on the deck
Gather on deck to see a little island called Isla Tucker. It is famous for its colony of Magellanic penguins, birds, dolphins and sea lions. Next, we sail through the narrow Canal Gabriel.
Day 4 - Day 4: Surprising wilderness
The Chilean fjords are a big surprise to many, with its huge mountains and vast wilderness. And the surprise doesn’t get any less when we enter the Garibaldi fjord and two huge glaciers emerge at the end of the fjord. We take our small boats out for a closer look, exploring the area and the wildlife.
Day 5 - Day 5: Legend among seafarers
Cape Horn on the southernmost tip of South America is a legend among seafarers. If the weather is good we will go ashore. However, this is an area known for high seas and challenging conditions and if we make it this will be a great achievement.
Day 6 - Days 6 - 10: An experience of a lifetime
We will attempt to do landings in several places and we are convinced that this is going to be an experience you will never forget. Among the places we will see are Half Moon Island, Yankee Harbour and Cuverville Island, home to a large colony of Gentoo penguins. You can also look forward to visiting Neko Harbour is beautifully located in the innermost part of Andvord Bay, and Paradise Harbour got its descriptive name from the whalers of history. When the storms were at their worst, this is where they came to seek shelter.Staggeringly photogenic and blessed with some of the most spectacular Antarctic scenery imaginable, Half Moon Island is a glittering gem amongst these island treasures. Join the expedition team and explore Antarctica with landings to get a close look at thousands of penguins and seals, enjoy kayaking and visits to the most interesting places. On board there are several lectures, “scientific experiments” for Young Explorers Antarctica.
Day 7 - Day 11: Reflect on the Antarctic adventure
Enjoy a day at sea, recapping our experiences, exchange stories of experiences, photos and films with your fellow adventurers, have fun in the explorer room or simply relax on deck.
Day 8 - Day 12: Explore by foot
Stanley is a very small town, but is still the capital of the Falkland Islands. If you want to explore the city by yourself it’s easy to do it on foot.
Day 9 - Day 13: Shipwrecks and sandy beaches
New Island is an adorable island, with sandy white beaches and turquoise waters. Except for the temperature it could easily be mistaken for a Caribbean island. We will pass an old shipwreck on our way ashore to enjoy a day amongst penguins, seals and elephant seals.
Day 10 - Day 14: Enhance your experience with excursions
It's your choice to embark on optional excursions. There are several on offer to see the penguins, hike in the area or kayak in the pristine waters.
Day 11 - Day 15: Coastal breezes
The last days on board are spent crossing the Drake Passage and then sailing along the coast of Argentina.
Day 12 - Day 16: Family dinner
Spend time with family, old friends, new friends and our friendly expedition team, and enjoy the farewell dinner of the last evening.
Day 13 - Day 17: The journey ends
Arriving in Montevideo it’s time to say goodbye. If you want to have a bit more fun before going home, you are more than welcome to join our optional excursions in the post programme.
Day 14 - Please Note:
